Overview

"I regularly address the notion of the female gaze through exploration of female agency and sexuality." - Iga Bielawska

Iga draws from her experience as a queer woman, using found images and recreating them through a soft, intimate lens. By exploring numerous female identities and perspectives, she tells a visual story of the female experience separate from the heteropatriarchal male gaze.

Following centuries of objectification in depictions of women, she aims to reframe the representation of female figures in a way that is most comfortable to her, free from gendered voyeurism and spectatorship. She regularlly paints women in various domestic settings or intimate spaces, allowing them to comfortably showcase their identities while being the active narrators of these portraits.

More recently, she has been focusing on otherworldly themes and her upcoming zodiac series. The aim of this series is to diversify the target audience for zodiac themed work without erasing the queer and female communities who have paved the way for astrology the way we interact with it today.
